Reimagining the Piaggio Ape AD1
What once served as a painter’s work vehicle has now become a fully electric vintage icon that bridges tradition and modern mobility. Powered by the evoTractionBattery 48/10, the Ape delivers up to 80 kilometres of range and reliable performance for everyday use.
From workhorse to electric classic

The Piaggio Ape AD1 from 1965 has a remarkable story to tell. Initially used in Italy by an independent painter, it remained unused for around 10 years before being imported to Switzerland in 2021. Its new owner decided to restore the vehicle entirely and take it a step further: the Ape would become the first of its kind in Switzerland to be converted to electric drive. The evoTractionBattery 48/10 was chosen for its compact size, suitability for small vehicles, and simplified approval requirements.
Project story
After its first registration in 1965, the Ape served for decades as a reliable work vehicle. By the time it arrived in Switzerlan, after many years of storage, it quickly became clear that the electrification would involve much more than installing a new drivetrain.
The mechanical components were worn out, the body was damaged in several areas, and the original 170 cc two-stroke engine was inoperable. What started as a light restoration soon turned into a complete rebuild down to the last component.
A Project of Challenges and a Happy Ending
A specialised company was initially commissioned to carry out the electrical conversion. Shortly before completion, however, the company went bankrupt, leaving behind a half-finished vehicle that required both mechanical and electrical reconstruction as well as complete recertification.
Despite this unexpected setback, the project was completed. On 15 May 2025, the Ape received its official Swiss road approval.
Technical implementation
To simplify electrical approval in Switzerland while meeting performance and safety requirements, a 48-volt system was chosen for the conversion.
Components used
• ecvoTractionBattery 48/10
• 48-volt system voltage
• 10 kWh capacity
• Integrated battery management system
• Approx. 80 km range
• Electric drivetrain (customer implementation)

Highlights and challenges
The restoration process brought several surprises. Many parts were far more damaged than anticipated, requiring the vehicle to be completely disassembled and rebuilt. What was meant to be a gentle refurbishment became a complete technical and visual overhaul.
Thanks to patience, technical expertise, and meticulous artistry, the project gradually evolved into an impressive and authentic result.
A brief anecdote
Initially, the plan was to restore only what was necessary. But once dismantled, it became evident that nearly every part required refurbishment or replacement. The extensive effort paid off: today, the Ape looks almost like new while retaining its original charm.
Now fully electric, the Piaggio Ape AD1 drives quietly, reliably, and without emissions.
