Brunnen becomes production site for high-tech battery storage systems

High-tech production of lithium-ion battery storage for buildings, electric vehicles and boats

Brunnen, 04.10.2018 - The Swiss technology company ecovolta is building a high-tech production facility for lithium-ion battery storage systems for buildings, electric vehicles and boats in Brunnen (Schwyz). More than 40 jobs will be created at the former site of the aerospace company RUAG. The fully automated battery production will start in October 2018 and reach an annual capacity of 200 MWh in the final expansion phase.

At the end of October 2018, Brunnen will also become the headquarters of ecocoach AG, the company behind ecovolta. The company has developed an innovative smart energy and smart home system. With its help, homeowners can reduce their energy consumption, charge electric cars particularly efficiently and increase their living comfort. The entire control is carried out by means of an easy-to-use app. Property managers can significantly simplify their activities with the system. ecocoach AG was established by the Reichmuth family from Schwyz. The technology company pursues the goal of an independent and environmentally friendly energy supply in buildings and in mobility.

In addition to battery assembly, in which battery cells are combined into complete battery systems, a research and development area for battery applications with a focus on electromobility is being established in Brunnen. Among other things, complete electric drive prototypes are developed and tested there. For this purpose, ecovolta combines the engineering expertise of various companies from Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Italy. For production and the in-house research and development department, ecovolta uses a total area of around 7,500 m2.

"We deliberately chose the Brunnen location because it means short distances for European industry, reliable just-in-time delivery and proximity to leading technical training centres and universities in Switzerland," says Pirmin Reichmuth Managing Director of ecocoach AG.

In its Swissfactory in Brunnen, ecovolta will use an energy storage construction principle and an automated manufacturing process that uses machines from the Swiss mechanical engineering company Stäubli, among others. The construction and manufacturing principle enable the flexible production of round and angular lithium-ion battery packs that are individually adapted to the needs of vehicle manufacturers. Compared to products from other suppliers, the storage units are distinguished, among other things, by the fact that they do not require active cooling and achieve particularly high energy densities of 480 watt hours per litre. ecovolta storage units are already being used in electric cars, motorbikes, boats and logistics vehicles.
