22 July 2024  - The diversity of students and fields of study promotes research into new technologies and innovative materials, such as basalt fibres and alternative drive and energy systems. Consequently, the environmental impact can be reduced while high mechanical properties and top performance are ensured.

From July 1st to 6th, 2024, the "Monaco Energy Boat Challenge" took place in the waters of Monaco. A globally unique motorboat event that aims to herald a sustainable future through alternative energies. This year, for the eleventh time, universities and companies worldwide came together to compete and present their innovative solutions. To find amongst them the Physis PEB team and their Polimi Energy Boat.

As one of its main sponsors ecovolta provided the PEB team with two batteries and shared the excitement for the glorious race. The effort paid off: the Polimi Energy Boat achieved eighth place in the overall standings and first place among the prototypes with a hybrid energy system, of which it was also named the lightest boat. But that's not all; the PEB team also won the "Sustainable Yachting Technology Award by Foundation Prince Albert II" for their innovative project.

We congratulate the entire PEB team on their success!

The Polimi Energy Boat

The prototype of the Polimi Energy Boat is an electric catamaran powered by a lithium-ion battery and a hydrogen PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell. These energy sources are controlled by specially developed electronic circuit boards and connected to the 10 kW electric motor via a DC-DC converter. The engine is equipped with custom-designed 3D-printed propellers and a newly created counter-rotating gearbox. The entire drive is supported and protected by a carbon fibre cockpit. Another in-house development by the students.
